A private dinner for physicians and dentists · Durham Region · Saturday, November 7th, 2026, 5:00 pm · 30 seats
Over dinner, two advisors from AT Financial Group walk through the ways an Ontario professional corporation's retained earnings become personal wealth: which are free, which cost something, which carry real risk, and in what order to use them. You leave with your own numbers on one page. No sales presentation. Spouses welcome.

Most advisors serve everyone. Beyond The Practice, the physician and dentist practice of AT Financial Group, serves practising physicians, specialists and dentists, most of them incorporated. That focus is the point: a medicine or dentistry professional corporation has its own rules on who can hold shares, its own tax on retained earnings, its own insurance plans through the OMA and CDSPI, and, for dentists, a practice that will one day be sold. A plan that does not start from those facts is a plan for someone else.

Four pillars. Every service is a page you can read before you book.
Protect: insurance for physicians and dentists
Coverage that pays if you cannot practise, dies with the right owner, and sits in the corporation only when that is the better structure.
Extract: corporate tax planning
Getting money out of the corporation at less than 47.74%, in the right order, with the trade-offs written down.
Grow: investments and real estate
TFSA, RRSP, RESP, FHSA and RRIF first, then the corporation, then everything else, in that order for a reason. Read about investing for physicians and dentists.
Preserve: retirement, estate and succession
The corporation is taxed twice at death without a plan. With one, once, and at the lower rate.

How it works
01
You send the certificate, the last corporate return and your current coverage. We read them before we say anything.
02
You get the three things we would raise first, with the Ontario numbers behind each one written down.
03
You get a short written plan: what to change, in what order, and what each step costs and saves.
04
Once a year we check the plan against your corporate return and adjust it before the year end, not after.
What to bring to the first meeting: last year's T1 and T2, your corporate financial statements, your insurance certificates. If you do not have them handy, bring nothing and we will tell you what to find.

The trade-off
Neither column wins outright. Association coverage is cheaper and easier to get; an individually owned contract is yours to keep and harder to change out from under you. Most physicians and dentists end up holding both.
| Association or group plan | Individually owned contract | |
|---|---|---|
| Definition of disability | Varies by plan. Some association contracts include own-occupation; many group plans move to any-occupation after two years. | Own-occupation is available and stated in the contract, priced as a rider on most policies. favourable |
| Premiums | Usually step-rated and reviewable, so the plan can reprice the whole class. | Guaranteed non-cancellable contracts exist, where the insurer cannot change the premium or the terms. favourable |
| Portability if you leave the association | Coverage generally ends with membership or employment. | The contract is yours. Membership, employer and practice can all change without touching it. favourable |
| Benefit cap | OMA Insurance and CDSPI both publish disability maximums around $25,000 a month. | Higher amounts are possible across insurers, subject to financial underwriting. |
| Underwriting | Often simplified, and there are enrolment windows with no medical evidence for new members. favourable | Full medical and financial underwriting, which is harder once a health history exists. |
| Cost | Lower at the start, with subsidised rates for residents and new members. favourable | Higher at the start, and fixed for the life of the contract on a non-cancellable policy. |
